A strong performance saw Sean Iacono clinch the annual Silver Cup for Lightning Sprints, presented by Everyday Finance Solutions / Speed Partz Australia, last Saturday night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway.
The current Australian and Queensland Title holder, who finished second in both of his heat races, won the opening 15-lap feature race, and achieved third in the second 15-lap feature race to come away with the overall win and the $500 winner’s cheque.
Despite the difficult start to the season, the Toowoomba-based racer proved too strong and consistent on the way to his overall victory.
Newly-crowned NSW Champion Kurt Wilson endured a mixed run on the night, with a mechanical issue stopping him from taking part in the opening feature race, before he was able to come back and win the second feature race. In the heat-race action, Wilson finished second in the opening heat race and a win in the second heat race.
The surprise package of the night came in the consistent form of Lindsay and Brendon Clapham. The Lismore-based brothers rounded out the two podium positions in the first feature race in second and third respectively. In the second feature race, the duo ran fifth and sixth.
Ian Galvin was the first B grade home on the night overall.
A mechanical fault put a damper on the comeback by David Van Vegchel, after he was unable to start either of the feature races. Van Vegchel’s team-mate Sean Hill performed well, with a fourth-place finish in both of the feature races.
After winning the first heat race, defending Queensland Club Champion Michael Gollagher was unable to finish the first feature due to a hole in the muffler that brought his night to a premature end.
Dion Prowse was able to come back from a DNF in the first feature race to finish second in the second feature race of the night to end the Silver Cup event on a high.
The next Queensland Lightning Sprints race meeting will also be at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway on the Saturday night of March 26.
