Not Just a Man’s Game

Throughout the Australian speedway scene there are numerous female competitors, and the Lightning Sprints in Queensland are no different and they currently have two female racers keeping their male rivals honest.

Kirsty Kelly (Brisbane, Qld) and Emma Harris (Mullumbimby, NSW) have rich pedigrees in the sport of speedway, with Kirsty’s parents, Kathy and John, being former front-running Sprintcar drivers, while Emma’s dad, Lance, has a long history in the sport by previously competing in the Bombers class.

When it comes to on the track, Kirsty and Emma are far from token racers. In only her second season in the class, Kirsty has already picked up a podium finish in last season’s Australian Title, while Emma has been competing in Lightning Sprints for the past four seasons, which has also seen some time spent competing successfully in Compact Speedcars, and is a capable top-five contender and two seasons ago finished an impressive third in the Queensland A Grade Championship.

This Sunday night (January 24), the Lightning Sprints make their latest appearance at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, and both Kirsty and Emma are going to be out there mixing it with their male rivals throughout the three heat races and feature race.
