It certainly wasn’t easily achieved, but last Saturday night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Scott Genrich returned from a crash at the previous race meeting to clinch his maiden Lightning Sprint feature-race win of the season.
Current Australian and Queensland Champion Sean Iacono started the 15-lap feature race from pole position and charged to the lead from the outset. Iacono led the field for the opening seven laps before he was passed for the lead by Genrich. Once out in front, Genrich was never challenged, despite the best efforts of Iacono, and went on to score a comfortable win at the fall of the chequered flag to avenge the disappointment of the previous race meeting’s crash.
Lismore’s Kurt Wilson, who is the current Australia and Queensland # 2, fought hard to come home in second place, while former Australian Champion Dave Fanning rounded out the podium finishers in third. The latter made a cameo return to the Lightning Sprint class driving the Qld # 26 car owned by Donny Robertson.
After setting the early pace, Iacono struggled in the second half of the feature race and came home in fourth. Jeremy Hassell, Emma Harris, current Australia # 3 Kirsty Kelly (who had spun out in the middles stages of the race in between turns three and four), Glen Prowse, Shane Matthews and Ian Galvin completed the finishers.
Peter Campbell was the feature race’s only non-finisher, after he had retired to the infield on lap seven.
Earlier in the night, Kelly and Fanning claimed the heat-race wins. Other strong performers in the heat races came from Genrich and Campbell.
Problems in the heat races saw veteran Keith Blatch unable to take his place in the feature-race field.
The next race meeting on this season’s calendar is going to be on the Sunday night of January 24 at Archerfield Speedway.
